Landscape Arch in Arches National Park

Oak Leaf and Ice

It is April with many signs of spring, but the wind is still cold. A winter snowshoe trip to Arches National Park led to this winter painting of Landscape Arch. I am still exploring the relationship between water, ice, and rock. The below painting, "Junction Creek in February", was also accepted into 2010 Gateway to Imagination, a national juried art competition at the Farmington Museum in northern New Mexico.

Junction Creek in February

In the midst of freezing temperatures and endless snow I have found myself painting impressions of snow, water, ice, and rocks. The above painting was juried into the Durango Arts Center's Four Corners Commission Show in January. My inspiration came from a favorite walk near Durango, Colorado.

Botanical Illustration of Orchid in Pen and Ink

An example of an earlier work used in a lecture on the history of Botanical Illustration for the Colorado Native Plant Society at the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. This lecture was given on January 26 with FLC art professor, Amy Wendland, who focused on materials used.

Rock People (formation: diamond peak pluton)

As I work in my warm studio on this first day of 2010 my thoughts keep returning to our Grand Canyon trips this last year. Having put on the river in mid-December 2008, we had a cold and stormy trip, but a very memorable experience. Our September 2009 trip was very relaxing by comparison. Below are several plein air watercolor paintings on Claybord created during that trip.
